My studies....

From all the entries in my blog, it may seem like I am having a fantastic holiday here…...but in actual fact, I am a full-time student and just a part-time tourist.

The pictures I uploaded so far are all about the exciting events that happened here. In order to paint a truer picture of what is going on here…I’ve decided to blog about my studies.

Life as a student here is pretty routine…..lecturers, tutorials, exams, hanging out in the library, and etc. So far, it has been quite fun, going classes, attending tutorials, discussing homework, studying for exam….it reminded me of the good old days back in MMU.

For those of you who doesn’t already know, I am now studying Masters In Computational Logic, in Free University of Bolzano. It’s a fairly new university, but has a few established research groups, namely KRDB, DBS and etc.

If you are wondering what is Computational Logic, here’s a brief description from me, after one month plus of attending courses:

******************************************************
Here’s an interesting quote:

Computational Logic -> which is quite dreadful stuff if you’re from comp science” (John see, “Breaking News”)

Hahaha….totally agree with him, because some of the subjects are purely computer science based and are loaded with lots of proving and theorems.

Here’s a classic example about logic:

Premise 1: All men are mortal
Premise 2: Socrates is a man
—————————————————————————
Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal
—————————————————————————

We learn things like Predicate Logic, First Order Logic, Tableaux, Classical Logic and the like…..techniques and methods to model logic and apply them into computing.

******************************************************

The pictures below illustrates some of the classes I am currently attending, they are the curtesy of Simonas, my classmate.

In Data Mining class, learning genetic algorithm

Theory of Computing class, one of the “killer” subject in this semester. As you can see, the board is full of theorem provings.

In one of the computer labs.

So what do you think about my studies?

they still use blackboards…
and chalks…
haha

Yaya…they still use chalks and blackboards…..but in general, the whole university is quite canggih….hahha. It feels like I am back to secondary school =p

You’ll be surprised that research have shown that the use of chalk and blackboard is much more effective than whiteboard and pen markers in certain subjects.
If your classroom is not well lit, blackboards certainly provide more contrast to what’s been written. Whiteboards only work really well under a bright, well-lit classroom (with white light).

Moreover, you can’t shade with pen markers, can you?

how come simonas can take those pictures…

A very good blog, especially your thought about Logic. Nice photos too.

Yansen: Simonas took them quietly with his digital camera.

Huy: Thanks…i visited your blog too, but it was all in Vietnamese, -> non capisco, haha.

i hate the stench a whiteboard marker exudes… GO BLACKBOARDS! Awesome experience mei sin! Cherish it you shall. Yearn for world domination i will…. _
BTW “snowflakes”... our senior Sarah also named her blog snowflakes :P and the best part is both of you went to further your education in other countries… this is a conspiracy! i shall name my blog snowflakes too….. now to choose my prefered country to study in…_

hey there! the classic example of the logic is way too simple and easy lah! but knowing a bit on 1st order logic, i’m very sure the course is much more “sakit kepala” than the classic example of logic! Hang in there gal! u sure make it!

BTW how many “logics” they actually have???

P/s: our deadliest fears in ABMB (EMV Full grade) is in production already. Thank god everything went OK ;o)

Sue: The classic example is just the simplest example to illustrate logic. The ones that we are going to learn here are 100x more difficult..hhahaha.

Hey i think there’s something wrong Alliance Bank email, I’ve sent mails to CPSIS and to Ms Mak, dun think u all received my mail. In future, i will send to CikSoy78 instead.
Hey, good to hear your voices….i miss u guys a lot. Take care and keep in touch ya!!

Love you guys!
