Castel Roncolo
4 January 2007

I am an outdoor person! Staying indoors for too long a time will definitely drive me to the wall. Thankfully, during this 2 weeks break, I got to go around, visiting interesting places around Bolzano with my friends. One of which is the Castel Roncolo, built in 1237 by the von Wangen Lords.
A step into this medieval castle makes u feel like u are living King Arthur’s time…or Robinhood’s era. Castel Roncolo, also known as Runkelstein Castle in German, towers high above rocks at the entry of Val Sarentino. This place is famous for it’s comprehensive secular fresco painting for medieval times. If I am not mistaken, entrance fees cost around 6 euros…..so my friends and I opted just to stay in the courtyard, enjoying picturesque view of Bolzano from the castle.
Seriously, I would really love to visit those famed rooms with medieval paintings, probably with John next time.
Castle Roncolo is only one of many famous castles around Bolzano, there are many more: – Castel Mareccio – Maretsch Castle – Castel Firmiano – Sigmundskron Castle
Shall visit them when I’ve got the time!
