Carnevale di Venezia
19 February 2007
The Carnival of Venice, is an annual festival, held in Venice from 9th Feb to 20th Feb. This carnival has a long history, in fact it was first recorded in 1268. It’s actually a grand version form of a Masquerade party, where people disguises themselves with a mask. I feel fortunate to be part of this event, seeing people dressed up in the 17 / 18th century outfit, with their mask on.
The whole of Venice was full of tourist from around the world. The small alleys were packed with people. The usual 10 minutes walk from the train station to San Marco’s square took more than half an hour. I had to queue up for toilet in McDonalds for more than 45 minutes! Was really madness. But apart from all these, everything was great.
This is my second time in Venice….it was better this time, because the weather was cooler. Took a stroll in front of San Marco’s square…..seeing all the gondolas parked along the water edge, enjoying the cool, fresh breeze, the feeling was simply great. And when it’s time for Rasha to get her dose of coffee, we went to a cafe, and we enjoyed coffee and tea in the open air.
Will return to Venice yet again, when John comes to Italy =)

They call it “Carnevale di Venezia”, it means “the carnival of Venice”. Yeah, it was really magnificient, i think the closing of the carnival, which falls on the 20th Feb, will be much more exciting. If you want information on the carnival, here’s a write up about it in wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_of_Venice. Next time when u come, u definitely have to get the masks in Venice =p

Hehe, I was about to tell u the other day about this carnival, though I don’t know exactly when it’ll take place, but I know it’s the Carnevale di Venezia. Hehe, I have read tons eventhough I haven’t gone there. :P Have spent hours reading travel guides in the bookshops.
The carnevale looks really unique, culturally. Being the birthplace (not Venice but Italy as a whole) of operatic theatre in the 16th century, I’m sure these masks were significant elements in the early beginnings of Italian opera. Heh! But I must admit that some of the masks are shockingly grotesque! I like the aqueduct-looking building at St. Marco’s and also the torre. I guess I like the architecture and history more!
